Why move to EMIS?

Migrating to EMIS can improve patient care, improve practice efficiencies and promote return on investment

EMIS provides integrated medical information systems for general practice, designed to support the detailed care processes involved in the encounters between the patient and the primary healthcare professional. Intuitively designed to meet general practice needs as closely as possible, the software unites functionality with ease of use.

Migrating to EMIS can improve patient care, improve practice efficiencies and promote return on investment.

Improving patient care

Better data capture and report facilities to identify at-risk patients

Population Manager makes it easy to identify the patients where action is needed. The high quality of data entry ensures that at-risk patients do not slip through the net. Alerts Manager is an important feature in ensuring pro-active care, highlighting actions required at the most relevant time.

Intelligent prescribing

By highlighting relevant interactions, allergies and contra-indications at the point of prescribing and taking into account the individual patient’s medical history and current drugs, the prescribing module is intuitive to save time and prevent common oversights. Dangerous drugs and their recommended dosages are highlighted very clearly at the point of prescribing. The EMIS Drug Database includes the BNF, which is kept continually up to date.

Decision support tools

Mentor on the Web – an immediate reference tool, containing comprehensive reference material. This can quickly be referred to during consultations, ensuring real time decision support and providing differential diagnosis information.

PILS – a full library of patient information leaflets and support group data which can be printed and given to the patient.

www.patient.co.uk is a definitive source of information for patients, containing PILS. It is used by both the general public and GPs alike.

Patient services – increasing convenience and access to healthcare

EMIS Access enables patients to book or cancel appointments online, at their own convenience, even out of hours. This can improve practice accessibility for commuters, those who work anti-social hours and disabled patients.

ePMS (electronic prescription management service) enables patients to request repeat prescriptions by web, telephone or post, and have them delivered to their home or workplace. This can help disabled and elderly patients and busy commuters.

Maximise consultation time

By setting up preferred templates, consultation filters, headers, synonyms, and Read code triggers to templates or codes most often selected data entry time can be minimised, allowing more time for discussion with the patient during consultations. In addition, the ability to quickly print or export a patient’s entire record from one option minimises keystrokes.

Improve practice efficiencies and return on investment

Fast data access and entry

Easy entry templates and synonyms ensure a good database for data collection and retrieval, as defined by the nGMS contract. Designed to ensure that data is only ever entered once, and then populated throughout the system, data entry is fast and effective.

Accurate and simple to use reporting tools

Population Manager, a set of over 160 searches, are used to present the information required for the nGMS contract in an easy to understand way.

Intelligent prescribing

The prescribing is fully configurable to the practice or PCT formulary and links to the BNF, resulting in safer prescribing whilst saving time.

Easy to learn

The Windows-based system provides familiarity and enables staff to learn the system much faster and intuitively.

EMIS provides bespoke training during the first year, delivered by a designated EMIS trainer at a pace to suit the practice.

Practice staff can call the EMIS Training Line at any time, for a reminder or an explanation on any part of the system.

Online services save staff time and money

EMIS Access allows patients to view, book and cancel appointments online, as well as pre-register and send secure messages. This frees time for busy reception staff and can save a small practice on average £1,000 per year. EMIS Access also enables patients to order repeat prescriptions online, 24 hours per day, saving significant admin time for the practice.

ePMS enables patients to request repeat prescriptions by web, telephone or post, and have them delivered to their home or workplace. It is estimated that an ePMS script takes one minute to fulfil, compared to a normal prescription, which takes four minutes. On average, if 25 per cent of a practice’s repeat prescriptions are done through ePMS, the practice can save one day per month in receptionists’ time.

Egton Arrivals allows patients to announce their arrival at the surgery for their pre-booked appointment via a PC terminal. This frees up reception staff for other less routine, more productive tasks.

Software developments and upgrades

All software upgrades and developments are supplied automatically and there is no hidden charge. This ensures that the system will be up to date now and in the future.

Low total cost of ownership over medium- to long-term

In our experience, we have found that typically we can offer one of the lowest long-term TCO costs in the primary healthcare market.

Simple data transfer

Understanding that transferring to a new system can be difficult. We aim to work with you to ensure that the process is as simple as possible and meets your individual needs entirely.

At EMIS, we take a collaborative approach towards data transfer, to ensure that it is completed to your satisfaction. The transfer will be carried out by a data transfer consultant designated to your practice.

Working closely with the consultant, you will be involved in a number of detailed quality checks on your data. Only when you are happy with the quality of your data, will it be loaded into your new EMIS system.

Conclusion

Choosing EMIS as your clinical system can actually save a practice a considerable amount of money. With over 20 years’ experience in developing systems to meet primary care needs as closely as possible, EMIS systems are designed to improve practice efficiency, and therefore help practices make substantial savings in time and cost.

Practices can offset the cost of an EMIS clinical system simply by using some of EMIS’s unique software features, included as standard with an EMIS clinical system.
