With the growing number of electronic patient records held in both Primary and Secondary Care, the need for a complete EHR has never been greater. The EMIS Primary Care System (PCS) Enterprise edition has been designed to meet this challenge.

EMIS PCS will support the provision of patient information at many levels and facilitate secure access 24/7 by the wider health care community. The therapies module within the system enables patient cycles of referral, episodes of care and discharge to be recorded alongside the GP record.

The system has been designed with future technological capabilities and developments in mind, such as sharing data between clinical systems. EMIS is involved in a number of pan-supplier interoperability projects with other Primary Care system suppliers, to develop common data exchange standards. This includes GP2GP record transfer and interoperability between in- and out-of-hours Primary Care systems. Information is transferred directly between specialist health care systems using a National Standard Xml schema (HL7 Version 3). Systems interoperability enables seamless, secure and contextually meaningful exchange of clinical data.

An overview of the system

The EMIS Primary Care System (PCS) Enterprise edition has been designed to further develop EMIS' provision of a complete system solution for primary care. This is a brief introduction to the system, and the key principles that lie behind its development.

The system is scaleable, multi-practice, multi-disciplinary with shared EPRs and seamless data exchange. Based on 3-tier architecture, whilst utilising Microsoft.Net technologies, EMIS PCS has the flexibility to increase the number of clients with its ability to scale to thousands of simultaneous user connections. EMIS PCS is accredited to RFA 99 v1.2.

EMIS PCS Enterprise edition is tailored to meet general practice needs as closely as possible, whilst supporting specialties allied to medicine. The therapies module centres around a core generic administration module, with specific code sets and templates for each individual specialty. This provides a tailored software system for a wide range of therapies, including physiotherapy, podiatry and child health.

The system has been designed to meet future changes and developments in primary health care, such as meeting the following key NHS targets:

• Implementing integrated primary care and community EPRs
• The electronic transfer of patient records between GPs
• 24 hour emergency care access to patient records.

Security of patient data is paramount, and the EMIS PCS Enterprise edition uses data item level security and confidentiality policies to prevent unauthorised export of sensitive information.
