Training overview
Training - get the most from your IT investment
Primary care organisations (PCOs) are increasingly dependent on the information that their computer systems hold. The reliability of the computer system is in turn dependent on competent users entering data correctly, hence providing these users with knowledge and basic skills has enormous advantages in the long run, as data is kept accurate, complete and secure. However, it is not only the data in the system that improves with staff training, as wider business objectives also benefit.
Training boosts morale, acts as a stimulant, emphasises priorities, reinforces good practice and improves productivity. Essentially a practice should benefit from reduced administration, improved patient data, streamlined processes and ultimately improved patient care.
It's a well known fact that only 20% of the success of an IT programme is down to hardware and software alone, 80% of the success is attributed to the management of change and the learning and development that underpins the programme. It is clear that training is a crucial element of success, not only in the early adopter stages, but as a continued support, development and reviewing process throughout the life of a project.
EMIS training services
EMIS provides a range of bespoke training services, delivered in a variety of different styles by a national team of accredited operations managers. Training is tailored to customer requirements, with core elements designed to complement the requirements of CfH, PCT Key Performance Indicators and the nGMS contract.
EMIS offers a variety of learning and development programmes for any organisation, but primarily EMIS training services are targeted at practices and PCOs and focus on the use and development of the EMIS clinical system. These services include:
- On-site training
- Set within the practice's own environment, using their EMIS system and dummy data, training is aimed at small groups of GPs, nurses, managerial or administrative staff. Training can either be modular, based around specific sections of the system, or focus on specific queries and knowledge gaps.
- Training courses
- Usually arranged by a PCT, local user group or consortium of practices, EMIS provides 'hands on' training courses held centrally, for small groups of delegates who want to cover specific modules of the system, perhaps in line with local targets or seasonal demands.
- Seminars
- Catering for larger groups, seminars use a projector and handout material to give delegates knowledge of specific modules of the system.
- Training/learning needs analysis
- EMIS can evaluate staff system skills, identify knowledge gaps and produce a training needs analysis for use in personal development plans and learning programmes.
- Floor-walking
- Following an installation, upgrade or practice move, an operations manager can be on hand to assist with system queries and the development of new workflows within the practice.
- Training and managed services
- Provision of EMIS supported resource to deliver key services, at a fixed cost, enabling the customer to focus on their core business whilst providing the flexibility to meet local requirements. This may include assisting in the development and implementation of standardised formularies, templates and protocols for local campaigns and even providing a regular, pre-defined report on the progress of a project. These services are now available for all the PCT star indicators.
- Seconded staff
- EMIS can provide seconded staff for one month or more to help a PCO to implement key strategic programmes. Seconded staff are accredited in all aspects of the EMIS clinical system and receive frequent updates on EMIS developments, whilst helping the PCT provide a flexible training solution without the restraints of permanent contracts.
- Locum training
- Working with locum GP agencies and principal GPs, EMIS frequently delivers training programmes to ensure delegates have core knowledge of the EMIS system, to give them the flexibility to meet the demands of modern day IT-centric practices. For more information, read PI038 EMIS training for locum GPs and PI041 EMIS training for locum nurses .
